St Anthony the Great

St. Anthony the Great, whose feast we celebrate today, decided at the age of 20 to give his large inheritance to the poor and commit to a life of solitude, penance, and prayer, after hearing Jesus’ words in the Gospel proclaimed at Mass: “Go, sell what you have and give to the poor.” He is believed to be the first Christian to embrace an ascetic life in the desert, removed from city life, and he soon attracted a following. Today, he is known as the father of monasticism.

St. Anthony, pray for us!
