I Hope I Am Like Him

“Who is this Christ? Is he like you?”

Perhaps you’ve heard this story, often attributed to the life of St. Teresa of Calcutta. A sick man asked her this question, as he marveled at her tireless service to himself and others in the name of someone named Jesus Christ.

“He is nothing like me,” the saint is said to have answered. “But I hope I am like him.”

Though the authenticity of this exchange cannot be verified, its message rings perfectly true: all the value of our stewardship lies in its relativity to the one in whose name we perform it.

Consider the figure of John the Baptist — a magnificent, towering character even purely from a literary or historical perspective. A martyr who fed on wild locusts and boldly spoke truth to power — a man so great some mistook him for the Messiah.

But why is he great? Because he prepared the way. All his accomplishments and escapades mean nothing if they are taken out of the context of salvation history. He only makes sense relative to Christ — and this is exactly as he wanted it. “One worthier than I is coming,” he insists. And because of that humility and that total embrace of God’s will, he is given one of the greatest honors in the New Testament — he baptizes the Son of God. 

Let’s examine our lives in the light of their relativity to Christ. How do we prepare the way? When Christ comes to us, what do we do? How do we leave ourselves open to be actors in God’s plan?

Espero ser como Él

“¿Quién es este Cristo? ¿Es como tú?

Quizás hayas escuchado esta historia, a menudo atribuida a la vida de Santa Teresa de Calcuta. Un hombre enfermo le hizo esta pregunta, mientras se maravillaba de su incansable servicio para él y los demás en el nombre de alguien llamado Jesucristo.

“Él no se parece en nada a mí,” se dice que respondió la santa. “Pero espero ser como Él.”

Aunque no se puede verificar la autenticidad de este intercambio, su mensaje suena perfectamente cierto: todo el valor de nuestra corresponsabilidad radica en su relatividad con aquel en cuyo nombre lo realizamos.

Considere la figura de Juan el Bautista, un personaje magnífico e imponente, incluso desde una perspectiva puramente literaria o histórica. Un mártir que se alimentaba de langostas salvajes y con valentía le decía la verdad al poder; un hombre tan grande que algunos lo confundieron con el Mesías.

Pero ¿por qué es grandioso? Porque preparó el camino. Todos sus logros y aventuras no significan nada si se sacan del contexto de la historia de la salvación. Solo tiene sentido en relación con Cristo, y esto es exactamente como él lo quería. “Viene uno más digno que yo,” insiste. Y debido a esa humildad y ese abrazo total de la voluntad de Dios, se le otorga uno de los mayores honores del Nuevo Testamento: bautiza al Hijo de Dios.

Examinemos nuestras vidas a la luz de su relatividad con Cristo. ¿Cómo preparamos el camino? Cuando Cristo viene a nosotros, ¿qué hacemos? ¿Cómo nos abrimos a ser actores en el plan de Dios?
