God is with us
Dec. 25 Lk 2:15-20
In Christmas, we celebrate God entering our earthly life in a new and powerful way. Jesus is the Emmauel or God with us. Key to understanding this event is how God chose to do that. He was born in a barn and birthed by a poor, peasant, village girl. The ones who received the news first were shepherds, folks lowest on social ranking, and he was also born in the midst of very troubling times. What the story proclaims is that God has chosen to become one with us to the depths of our darkest human experience. He has come to proclaim and establish His rule of love to all, but especially to the rejected and unloved of this world.
