“Come and See”

John 1:35-42

John begins his Gospel with this strange interaction between Jesus and His first two disciples. Jesus notices that he has caught their attention and asks them “What are you looking for?” They respond “Rabbi, where are you staying?”

Jesus then responds with a simple invitation “Come and see”.

The disciples are obviously interested but they want to know the specifics about him. All Jesus gives is “well, you’ll just have to come and see.” Jesus’ invitation is a call to the path of faith which embodies that accustomed phrase we walk by faith and not by sight.

The call of God is often cloaked in uncertainties. The “call” demands that we trust our spiritual instincts even if it means a walk into the unknown. If can muster that kind of faith and trust, Jesus will open a whole new world to us.
