Mark 4:35-41 The Storms of Discipleship

They say into every life must come a storm or two. Maybe for some of us we feel like we’re living in a constant storm. Our Gospel story this Sunday is about being caught in a storm that is life threatening. Jesus’ response is reassuring. Have faith, He says, because I have the power to calm the storm. Faith and perseverance will get us through the storms. More subtly in this story is a challenge however. The fact is Jesus led them into this frightening situation. In relating this story, Mark is telling us that authentic discipleship and following Jesus will inevitably bring us storms and difficult situations. The challenge to us; are we prepared to follow Him even if it means leaving our comfort zone and facing storms not of our own choosing for the sake of what God hopes to accomplish through us.
