Do You Speak Stewardship?

If you are married, I’m guessing that you know the best way to break bad news to your spouse, whether you realize it or not. Maybe it’s simply that you know not to talk about the budget after your wife’s football team has lost. Maybe you know your husband will take the news that your sister is coming to stay a little easier if you tell him over his favorite dinner. We do the same thing with our children, our friends, our coworkers — we have all learned the language of the people we love.

The truth is the same in every language, but it’s important for us to convey that truth graciously. That’s what Pentecost teaches us. The gift of being able to speak in tongues afforded the Apostles a practical skill to spread the Gospel message, but it also served as a powerful symbol of the importance of effective communication. Evangelization can only happen when you’re speaking in words a person is able, ready, and willing to hear.

Let’s ask ourselves: what is the language we need to speak to share the truth with the person who is standing in front of us? Is it the language of quality time? The language of concern? The language of laughter and friendship? The language of authenticity, of plain talk and frankness?

The Holy Spirit gave the Apostles the ability to speak in tongues, and it seems miraculous when we read about it in the Gospels — but only consider that we all have this same ability, in a certain way. ¿Hablas corresponsabilidad?

Si estás casado, supongo que conoces la mejor manera de darle malas noticias a tu cónyuge, ya sea que te des cuenta o no. Tal vez sea simplemente que sabes que no debes hablar sobre el presupuesto después de que el equipo de fútbol de tu esposa ha perdido. Tal vez sepas que tu esposo tomará la noticia de que tu hermana vendrá para quedarse un poco más tranquilo si le cuentas mientras come su cena favorita. Hacemos lo mismo con nuestros hijos, nuestros amigos, nuestros compañeros de trabajo: todos hemos aprendido el idioma de las personas que amamos.

La verdad es la misma en todos los idiomas, pero es importante para nosotros transmitir esa verdad con amabilidad. Eso es lo que nos enseña Pentecostés. El don de poder hablar en lenguas brindó a los apóstoles una habilidad práctica para difundir el mensaje del Evangelio, pero también sirvió como un poderoso símbolo de la importancia de una comunicación eficaz. La evangelización solo puede suceder cuando estas hablando con palabras que una persona puede, está lista y está dispuesta a escuchar.

Preguntémonos: ¿cuál es el idioma que debemos hablar para compartir la verdad con la persona que está frente a nosotros? ¿Es el lenguaje del tiempo de calidad? ¿El lenguaje de preocupación? ¿El lenguaje de la risa y la amistad? ¿El lenguaje de la autenticidad? ¿El lenguaje sencillo y de franqueza?

El Espíritu Santo les dio a los Apóstoles la habilidad de hablar en lenguas, y parece milagroso cuando leemos sobre esto en los Evangelios, pero solo consideremos que todos tenemos esta misma habilidad, de cierta manera. El Espíritu Santo puede mostrarnos y nos mostrará cómo hablar la verdad, si solo lo pedimos. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
