Live the Liturgy ~ Inspiration for the Week

“Love your enemies and do good to them.” We have such a hard time with this teaching! But it doesn’t end there. Jesus continues with turning the other cheek when struck, giving to everyone who asks, doing to others as you would have them do to you, being merciful, stopping our judgment of others, forgiving, and giving. We are okay when God does these things but get a little anxious when we realize that God really wants us to do them too! Secular justice and Gospel justice are definitely not the same. We need to remember that we are made in the image of God, not the image of ourselves. The Christian is called to act like Christ even in those situations where a more assertive or defensive response may seem more justifiable. In order to live up to this call we have to leave our resentment and need for retaliation behind, lose our defensiveness and bring into our mind and heart the realization of who we represent in this world. We are not here to satisfy or promote our own well-being and agenda. We are here for God’s. That’s a hard nut to crack especially when it comes to loving and forgiving people who do hurtful and violent things.

VIVIR LA LITURGIA ~ INSPIRACIÓN DE LA SEMANA (Live the Liturgy)

“Ama a tus enemigos y hazles el bien.” ¡Nos cuesta mucho esta enseñanza! Pero no termina ahí. Jesús continúa con poner la otra mejilla cuando te golpeen, dando a todo el que te pide, haciendo con los demás lo que te gustaría que te hicieran a ti, siendo misericordioso, deteniendo nuestro juicio hacia los demás, perdonando y dando. Estamos bien cuando Dios hace estas cosas, pero nos ponemos un poco ansiosos cuando nos damos cuenta de que Dios realmente quiere que nosotros también las hagamos. La justicia secular y la justicia del Evangelio definitivamente no son lo mismo. Necesitamos recordar que fuimos hechos a imagen de Dios, no a imagen de nosotros mismos. El cristiano está llamado a actuar como Cristo incluso en aquellas situaciones en las que una respuesta más asertiva o defensiva puede parecer más justificable. Para estar a la altura de este llamado, tenemos que dejar atrás nuestro resentimiento y la necesidad de represalias, perder nuestra actitud defensiva y traer a nuestra mente y nuestro corazón la comprensión de quién representamos en este mundo. No estamos aquí para satisfacer o promover nuestro propio bienestar y agenda. Estamos aquí por Dios. Es un hueso duro de roer, especialmente cuando se trata de amar y perdonar a las personas que hacen cosas hirientes y violentas.
